Mr. Whiskers is an important member of the family, and we'll go to any extent to ensure that our feline companions are happy and healthy. While we try our best to ensure a high quality of life, our cats are still susceptible to developing illnesses that can negatively impact their overall health. Fortunately, there is a natural product to try, and it's called CBD (Cannabidiol).
It's no secret that many people believe that CBD has many therapeutic benefits in regards to treating a host of disorders in human beings, but did you know that CBD is safe for cats as well? It's true, and the practice is growing in popularity among pet owners, as they hunt for alternative medicine that not only helps alleviate discomfort but optimizes their immune system.
What is CBD?
CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and is the second most known compound found in cannabis, right behind THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). While both CBD and THC interact with the endocannabinoid system to help treat similar issues, they are dissimilar in many ways as well. The biggest difference is the psychoactive effects THC produces as opposed to CBD, which contains no psychoactive elements.
What Are The Benefits of CBD Oil For Cats?
The potential benefits of CBD for cats are all very similar to that of humans and other animals. While we cannot recommend CBD to treat specific illnesses due to FDA regulations, feel free to try it out and see if it works for your cat.
There have been countless studies done, researching the effects of CBD on cats and dogs. One study facilitated by Cornell University on products from ElleVet Sciences determined that 80% of dogs that participated in the clinical trial experienced decreases in pain and an increase in their overall quality of their life after incorporating CBD into their daily regimen. Other studies are ongoing and increasing in number due to the popularity of CBD for pets, so we hope to have some definitive research on the matter soon.
What are the Side Effects of CBD?
The side effects associated with the consumption of CBD for cats are minimal, low impact, and are often remnants of its therapeutic capabilities. In the studies that have been conducted, none have reported serious risks connected with treating your pet with CBD.
Some of the low-risk side effects may include:
- Drowsiness – Drowsiness may be the result of too high of a dose, but as stated above, CBD is often used to treat anxiety, so this side effect may be directly correlated to treating the ailment. This side effect may be remedied by simply lowering the dosage.
- Low Blood Pressure – CBD may temporarily lower blood pressure if delivered in too high of a dose. A symptom of low blood pressure could be brief light-headedness.
- Dry mouth – Dry mouth in regards to CBD consumption refers to the effect it has on saliva production. A sign of decreased saliva production could manifest itself in increased thirst in your animal.
- Interactions with other drugs – CBD is not know to interact poorly with other pharmaceuticals, but extensive tests have also not been performed related to adverse reactions with other drugs. If your cat is on other medications for other ailments, it is advised to consult with your vet before treating your pet with CBD.
If you've never given your pet CBD, contact your vet and do your own research to ensure it is okay to use. Cats are very sensitive creatures, so start off with small doses to examine the effect it has on your cat's behavior. Once you've determined how your cat interacts with CBD, you can lower or increase the dosage at your own discretion.
